Hi! We’re so happy you bought this adorable turkey and Thankful sign Kit! It’s seriously cute-who could resist that little turkey?! Your kit comes with everything you need except some basic items like a sanding block, scissors, and a pencil; grab those items and you’re ready to start!
Let’s start by painting the front of the slat sign orange. You just need to paint the front, we’ll be painting the rest light ivory in a bit. Set it aside to dry.
Now paint the sides and back of the turkey and tail feathers brown. No need to paint the front since it will be covered with paper, but no harm done if you paint the whole thing.
Also paint the beak and gobbler (you know, the red thing that hangs off the turkey neck….we’re calling it the ‘gobbler’-haha.) Just free hand this piece, we rounded the gobbler and then painted the beak. Be sure to paint the sides as well.
While the turkey dries, you can finish the slat sign.
Start by slowly peeling the back off the vinyl piece. The vinyl should pull away onto the sticky side. Now place the saying onto the slat sign and use a vinyl tool, or a credit card to press it down really well. Then carefully peel off the transfer tape leaving the vinyl saying on the slat sign.
Paint over the entire front with light ivory. Be sure to dab around the vinyl being careful not to push paint into the words. If you dab carefully around the vinyl for the first coat of paint, you can paint more freely for the second coat. The paint creates kind of a seal around the vinyl after the first coat dries. Once the paint dries, peel away the vinyl revealing the orange words. Use a sanding block if you’d like to sand right over the whole front and around the edges for a more rustic look.
Now let’s get back to the turkey! Trace the turkey body onto the brown paper and cut out.
Then trace and cut each feather paper. The turkey body will cover the middle of the tail feathers, so there is no paper on the center feather.
Glue the brown paper to the body and glue the feather pieces onto the tail.
Now you can use a sanding block and/or nail file to sand the edges of the paper for a perfect fit.
Then assemble the turkey! Stand the body and feathers on the table before gluing to make sure the pieces match up for standing, then glue the body to the feathers. Also glue the beak and ‘gobbler’ to the turkey face. Use a sharpie or dot some black paint for the eyes.
Last, tie a piece of jute around the whole thing and this guy is ready for display! Adorable! Thanks so much for purchasing a kit and crafting with us!
