This summer popsicle sign/door hang makes us so happy! The colorful popsicles and yellow ribbon just scream summer. This craft is super fun to make too. Turn on some Beach Boys and let’s get to it!
What’s in your kit:
- Circle board
- Wood popsicle pieces
- Patterned paper
- Stain
- Paint
- Brushes
- Ribbon
- Vinyl
You will also need:
- Hot glue gun
- Pencil
- Scissors
(If you didn’t order a kit from us, most of these supplies can be purchased at The Wood Connection.)
How to make it:
Step 1- Trace paper:
I’m sure you noticed, this paper is double sided, so choose the side you want to be the front of your popsicle and trace onto the OTHER side. Since each wood piece is cut by hand they are all a little bit different, it is helpful to mark which popsicle goes to which color to make it easier when it’s time to glue the paper.
Step 2- Stain:
Paint one light coat of stain on the front of the circle. Feel free to use a paper towel to wipe away any excess stain. It doesn’t need to look perfect since we will be painting over it. The stain under white gives this sign some dimension, and we love how it looks!
We also put stain on the popsicle sticks so they stand out a little bit. We painted it on and wiped away immediately to keep it a little lighter.
Step 3- Cut and glue:
While the stain is drying, it’s a great time to cut out the paper and glue it to the popsicles.
Step 4-Letters:
The SUMMER letters are peel and stick. We found the best way to do this is to place one end of each letter onto the popsicle and carefully press the other lines of the letter down. (Rather than trying to place the whole letter at the same time.)
Step 5- White Paint:
Somehow I missed snapping a picture of the white paint process. Let’s blame summer, I have ‘kids are everywhere and always talking and asking to do things all day every day and the house feels like chaos all day every day’ brain- haha!
So once the stain is COMPLETELY dry, paint a light coat of white paint. Here’s the thing, the first coat is going to look like crap, just let it! You are doing it right if it looks awful. That first coat needs to be super light or you’ll have problems getting the vinyl to stick. Allow the first coat of white to dry COMPLETELY. It should dry pretty quick if you kept it light.
Then paint a second coat. Again, paint it light. This round will look much better than the first. Remember you want the stain to show through, that’s what adds the dimension and looks so good!
Step 6-Apply Vinyl:
You may want to set the popsicles on the sign to help with spacing before sticking the vinyl. If you’re new to vinyl, click HERE for step by step instructions.
Step 7-Glue popsicles:
When you have the popsicles placed where you want them, put a small mark to line up with once they have glue on them.
Step 8-Ribbon:
Tie the ribbon in a loose knot. To get the V cut on the ends, fold the ribbon in half.
And cut from the f0ld to the tip.
Use a hot glue gun to glue the ribbon in place. That’s it! Cutest summer sign ever!
