Hey everyone! We’re so excited to share how to make a wood block sign using a really fun technique! With this technique, you don’t need a vinyl cutter to make signs for your home, you just need a quote printed on a regular sheet of paper. Imagine the possibilities! We have been having so much fun making these block signs and we have four different quotes you can download and print to make one for yourself. This tutorial includes a quick time lapse video, step by step instructions with pictures, and the four quotes to download-you’ll be hooked on this technique once you give it a whirl!
Here’s what you need:
- wood block
- black paint
- white paint
- foam brush
- pencil
- paint pen
- tape
- wood dowel topper
- printed quote
Our wood block is 8×8. Of course, any size would work for this technique, just size your quote accordingly.
Here are the four printable quotes we designed and have as FREE downloads for you!
We worked out all the kinks with this project and have broken down the printables into two categories: EASIER and MORE DIFFICULT.
These two cursive quotes are easier:
Download Bless this Mess HERE.
Download Home Sweet Home HERE.
These two are a little more difficult:
Download Home sweet home wreath HERE.
Download Life is a beautiful Adventure HERE.
I put together a quick time lapse video, because A) I think time lapse videos are so mesmerizing to watch, and B) some of us are very visual people and videos are super helpful….even in fast motion.
DIY Wood Block Sign Time Lapse:
Now that you’re mesmerized, let’s get to the step by step instructions and hopefully answer any questions you might have.
Step by step tutorial:
First step- choose the quote you want on your sign. Anything goes! Create your own, find one online, or use one of ours. Print it to the correct size to fit your wood and set it aside.
Now, make sure your wood surface is smooth.
Then paint the sides and back of your block black. Let dry and then paint the front of your block white. Once all the paint is dry, you can sand the edges if you’d like.
Also, paint the wood dowel topper white. Now for the fun part! Turn your printed quote over and scribble over all the words. You’ll want to make sure the outside of every letter is scribbled over completely.Tape the print onto the block, right side up.With the pencil, trace over the quote.
Now pull the paper off, and you’re left with an outline! So cool right?!Pull out your paint pen and get tracing! Quick tip for using a paint pen-try it out on a scrap piece of paper before you use it on the wood to get a feel for how it writes.
Move right to left, being careful not to drag your hand through wet paint.
Let the paint dry and you can always go back to touch anything up if needed. Last, glue the wood topper on top and tie a piece of ribbon or jute around it.
We made one of each quote-
Which one is your favorite? I’m a little partial to the ‘Bless this Mess’ sign because it seems to best describe my life-haha!
