Felt Trees and Banner

Hi everyone!  We sure hope you are having a wonderful holiday season so far!  If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that I just moved, so things have been a little slow on the blog side.   I wouldn’t recommend moving…..in the winter…….right before Christmas.  Ha!  It has not been my favorite, but our Christmas tree is up and we are getting settled slowly but surely.  🙂

Despite being busy with the move, we did manage to squeeze in some Christmas crafting.  We are excited to share these cute felt trees and banner today.  We shared this over at The Ribbon Retreat a couple weeks ago too!  Felt is so cozy and fun and we just love it for Christmas crafts!

So here’s what you need to make these trees:

• Red felt
• White felt
• Green felt
• Batting
• Pinking shears and fabric scissors
• Ruler and pencil

Start by drawing a basic triangle shape on the felt using a ruler and pencil.

To make trees the same sizes as ours,  cut:

4 green triangles that measure 9 inches high by 8 inches wide

4 red triangles than measure 8 inches high by 6 1/2 inches wide

2 white triangles that measure 7 1/2 inches high by 6 inches wide

Of course, you can make whatever sizes you’d like! 🙂

After tracing the shapes onto the felt, cut them out using fabric scissors.

Now sew or glue the two triangles together.  Leave enough on the edge to trim with pinking shears.  Also, leave the bottom open for filling.  We kind of like the look of the white stitches, and we wanted the stitches to show up in the pictures for this tutorial;  of course, you could use thread in a matching color if you choose. 🙂  Also, there’s a REALLY good chance you are better at sewing than I am….don’t look too closely at the stitches. 😉

Now use a little batting to fill the tree.

Sew or glue across the bottom.

Next, use pinking shears to trim all around the tree.  

Repeat for as many trees as you’d like.  We made 5 trees total.

Now for the tree stand.  This stand it a great way to use up scrap wood.  If you don’t have scrap wood laying around you can pick up a 2 x 4 and wood dowel from The Home Depot.  They can even cut it for you.

Okay, here’s what you need:

• A 2 x 4 cut to 18 inches
• 5/16 size wood dowel
• Drill and 5/16 drill bit.
• White paint

First, mark where to drill the holes for the dowels.  We staggered our and spaced them evenly.

Now, cut the dowel into 5 tree trunks.  We cut ours as shown below.

Next, use a 5/16 drill bit and drill the holes for the dowels to go in.  Here’s a little tip when drilling holes.  Place a piece of masking tape on the drill bit about 3/4 of an inch from the drill bit tip.  The tape will stop the drill bit and each hole will be the exact depth.  It wall also prevent you from drilling all the way through on accident.  

Now place the dowels in the holes and paint the board and the dowels white.  We put the dowels in this order:

6 inch, 10 inch, 6 inch, 8 inch, and 5 inch.

After the paint has dried, use a seam ripper to make a small hole in the bottom of each tree.  Place the dowel in the hole and use hot glue to attach the tree to the dowel.

We tied a little piece of ribbon to the base of each tree.

Last, lets talk about the felt circle banner.

Here’s all you need:

• Five colors of felt circles size 1 3/4″
• Sewing machine

Simply start feeding the felt circles in the order you like through the sewing machine until the banner is as long as you want.
